The historic Glove Theatre in Gloversville, NY, was alive with energy on January 4, 2025, as Strange Magic NY delivered an unforgettable tribute to the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The evening kicked off on a heartfelt note with a speech from Board President Kathleen Perrott, whose deep love for the city and the theater was evident in every word. She reminded the audience that The Glove is a nonprofit organization powered entirely by volunteers, each driven not by obligation, but by passion. Perrott’s words, “I don’t have to do this; I get to do this,” resonated deeply, underscoring the privilege of contributing to this beloved institution.
The stage was set for an epic performance, and Strange Magic NY did not disappoint. This exceptional group—featuring Sean G. Dolan (vocals), Steve Jaworowski (guitar), Sal Patron (bass), Bob DiGiovanna (keyboard), Nick Troiani (keyboard), Rich Capitelli (drums), Livvie Leah (percussion and vocals), Caren Shilling (electric violin), and Janet Holmes (cello)—showed the massive dedication and skill required to faithfully recreate the complex sound of ELO.
The theater was packed with fans, many of whom braved traveling long distances in the snow to attend. The standing-room-only crowd was a testament to the band’s popularity and the universal appeal of ELO’s music. For those unfamiliar with ELO (what am I saying? PYX 106 was the soundtrack for those of us fortunate enough to be alive in the 70’s, 80’s, &, 90’s), the night proved you don’t need to be a die-hard fan to recognize their iconic songs. Songs like “Don’t Bring Me Down” require by unwritten code that you enthusiastically shout “BRUCE!” in perfect unison when the lyrics say to—a beloved tradition that never fails to bring people together.
Strange Magic NY’s set was both aural and visual magic, featuring a full-sized movie screen projection that elevated the experience. The visuals added an emotional depth, evoking feelings that lingered long after the final note. Sean Dolan and Livvie Leah provided strong vocals, their on-stage chemistry captivating the audience. Each member of the band played an integral role, from the soaring harmonies to the intricate instrumentals. Caren Shilling, dazzling in a stunning red dress, shone on electric violin, delivering fiery solos that electrified the room. Her virtuosity was as mesmerizing as it was powerful, a true highlight of the night.
The band treated fans to all the ELO favorites and surprised the crowd when Steve Jaworowski switched to acoustic guitar for a few Traveling Wilburys hits. A lighthearted moment came when the audience was quizzed on the members of the Wilburys, showcasing the knowledge (and enthusiasm) of some die-hard fans.
Strange Magic NY is a must-see band. They have mastered the art of recreating ELO’s iconic and intricate sound, blending it with their own engaging and fun energy. This isn’t just a concert—it’s a celebration of timeless music that brings people together in the most joyful way. From start to finish, this was an evening of strange magic. If you have the chance to see them, don’t miss it—you’ll leave with a full heart and a head full of unforgettable melodies.
All the best,
